Book Binding Options

Binding Styles & Formats

Business documents and traditional books can be bound using a number of different binding styles and formats. Office documents and traditional books are printed and bound using either a heavy, durable cover stock paper that allow for exceptional one-, multi-, or full-color printing, or a flexible, transparent plastic sheet that allow one to see the title of the cover page beneath it.

Choosing the right binding style and format can be tough because there are a lot of options that excel at a range of applications from annual reports, books, booklets, capability brochures, and directories to policy manuals, swatch books, and photo albums.

Below we provide a brief description of the seven or eight most popular binding styles and formats that are available on the market today; that our Company use to create, bind and produce all of our documents and books.

Plastic Comb Binding

Plastic comb binding is a type that allow for books to fold in half and lie flat when open. It is a quick and simple binding method that offers a basic closure for documents such as business proposals, formal presentations, training manuals and workbooks of up to 425 pages. Plastic combs are available and come in various colors and sizes. If prefer, the comb’s spine can be personalized with a name, book title, or company logo. This is the most popular bookbinding method that is seen in schools, libraries, and most offices.

Plastic Coil Binding

Spiral or plastic coil binding is a type that allow for books to fold in half and lie flat when open. Plastic coil binding does not bend or lose its shape, and therefore it is a good choice for annual reports, employee handbooks, training and service manuals, workbooks, marketing materials, and more. Plastic coils are available in more than 50 different colors, come in various sizes, and can be used to bind documents or books of up to 500 pages.

Wire-O Binding

Double loop, twin wire, or wire-o binding is a type that allow for books to fold in half and lie flat when open. Wires come in a handful of colors and sizes that range in diameter and can be used to bind documents and books containing 110 pages or less. This is a great method to use if your clients or customers require a high-quality, elegant, professional and presentable style.

Perfect Binding

Perfect binding is the most popular type of book binding that you see on soft cover books such as paperback books and magazines. The internal pages are printed on both sides of text weight paper, then gathered together (collated) into a book, one on top of the other, in numbered page order. The cardstock cover of the perfect bound book is placed over and around the inside pages, attached along the binding edge by the application of a strong yet flexible PUR glue.

Thermal Binding

Thermal binding is a great way to create and produce professional looking books. This binding process involves applying heat to the pre-formed and aggressive EVA glue strip embedded with book fabric in the inside groove lining/spine of the cover to quickly and securely binds the pages together. This binding style is great for photo books and yearbooks.

Saddle Stitch Binding

Saddle stitch binding is a type that quickly and easily hold a limited stack of paper together with two or more pins stapled in the folds. Saddle stitch is ideal for specific documents with page counts between 8 and 92 pages, and can be used for booklets, calendars, catalogs, guidebooks, journals, magazines and newsletters.

Metal Binding

Metal binding is the strongest, most durable and permanent book binding solution on the market today. With this binding style, a custom metal bar is crimped on the edge of your document, tightly holding it together.

Flip/Tear Pad Binding

Flip/Tear Pad Binding (padding for short) is a type that allow stacks of collated papers to be loosely held together with a special kind of glue-like compound  when tightly press together, apply and allow to dry.  By using this simple binding method, individuals and businesses can create and produce their own custom  printed note pads, scratch pads, or carbonless forms.
